CAM 125th Anniversary
CAM 125th Anniversary
by Jim Borgman
Local cartoonist, Jim Borgman, agreed to celebrate the Museum's anniversary by drawing a special cartoon featuring some of the Art Museum’s key pieces relevant to the greater Cincinnati area. "The Grant Wood [Daughters of the American Revolution] piece is less defensible on this point, I'll grant you, but through sheer osmosis it has made its claim as a Cincinnati object, I think," said Borgman.
Borgman, a Pulitzer Prize-winner, is a native of Cincinnati’s west side and a graduate of Elder High School. He grew up in Price Hill with three siblings, his mother and his father, a sign painter at the time. Borgman says one of his fondest childhood memories is when his father "would bring home signs to paint in the garage at night. After we all got our pajamas on, we’d go down to say good night, and I’d sit there and watch him paint the letters."
In the late 1960s, Borgman defined his own artistic ability while attending Elder High School. His drawings and caricatures of his teachers were so popular with his classmates, he and a few other students launched the Giraffe - an underground paper at the school. After graduation, Borgman attended Kenyon College and majored in art. His drawings were often published in the campus newspaper, the Kenyon Collegian, which eventually played a large part in helping Borgman land his role at the Cincinnati Enquirer where he recently celebrated his 30th anniversary.
